What is Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)?

IUI (Intrauterine insemination) is a fertility treatment that involves placing sperm inside a woman’s uterus to facilitate fertilization. IUI is often used when a man has a low sperm count or when a woman has difficulty conceiving due to ovulation disorders.

IUI is a relatively simple and low-risk procedure. IUI generally has a success rate of around 10%-20%, depending on several factors, including the woman’s age, the cause of infertility, and previous IUI cycles.

Steps involved in the IUI process:

IUI procedures usually begin at the beginning of the woman’s monthly menstrual cycle.

Ovarian stimulation: Medicines are often used to stimulate the production of multiple egg-containing follicles and prepare the uterine lining.
Monitoring: The fertility specialist will use an ultrasound to determine the proper time for insemination.
Ovulation induction: A hormone injection is given to the woman at the right time, which triggers ovulation.
Sperm washing: An andrologist will prepare the partner’s or donor’s sperm in our IVF lab. During this process, healthy, motile sperm are separated from non-motile sperm and other seminal cells and fluids.
Insemination: Sperm/semen samples are injected into the uterus through a flexible catheter that passes through the cervix.

The procedure is often effective for women with infertility, semen allergies, unfriendly cervical conditions, or cervical scar tissue. It can also help aspiring fathers with low sperm counts, minor sperm motility issues, or ejaculatory dysfunction.
